Costa Rica! We are a small Central American nation characterized by scenic beauty, social and political stability, a strong national healthcare system, protected environmental areas and high education levels.
Bordered on the south by Panama and by Nicaragua to the north, the beautiful Pacific Ocean to the west and the luscious tropical beaches of the Caribbean Sea to the east, Costa Rica is a melting pot of diverse cultures, landscapes and biodiversity. Two million tourists a year can't be wrong!
With miles and miles of pristine coastline, Costa Rica is a tropical paradise with world-class beaches and secluded get-a-ways. The mountainous regions of Costa Rica abound with life, teeming with unique flora and fauna, exotic tropical fruits and vegetables, hundreds of species of birds, monkeys and countless other rare animals. Costa Rica has become a bastion of eco-tourism and a center of environmental awareness for people from all over the world. Eco-tourism has become one of the most important economic engines for Costa Rica and has helped ignite government-sponsored initiatives for responsible, sustainable development.
For such a small country, Costa Rica is abundantly and biologically diverse with some 12,000 species of plants, 1,200 species of butterflies, 800 species of birds, 450 species of reptiles and amphibians and 232 species of mammals. The government has taken special precautions to conserve and protect Costa Rica's ancient rainforests by designating them as National Parks and Preserves (approximately 25% of the country is protected area!).
Friendly, polite and helpful, the people of Costa Rica will win you over with their warmth. Referred to by themselves as 'Ticos', Costa Ricans are a very family-oriented society. A small number of indigenous Indian tribes still remain throughout Costa Rica (estimated at 30,000 people), the Bribri on the Southern Caribbean coast, the Borucas on the Southern Pacific Coast and the Guayami on the Panamanian border (as well as few smaller groups). Much of Costa Rica's population (4 million) can be found working in one of their largest industries, agriculture. Farming of fruits, vegetables and dairy products are the most typical.
